I know it’s been a while since I posted, and I could very easily blame it on my busy lifestyle. But for once, I’m going to take the responsibility for my actions (I think they call it ‘adulting’) and explain that lately, I have just lacked inspiration for my blog, ideas and overall, motivation…

However, it’s no excuse. If it’s something that you love and are totally passionate about then no matter what stands in your way, you’ll somehow find the time to do it. Truth is, I love blogging, and I really need to dedicate more time to do things that I love. With that being said, I have a few new blog post ideas coming your way, and I promise you’ll love them.

On with the blog post… How to keep silver hair, SILVER!

So, when I post photos I seem to receive quite the influx of questions relating to my hair; How do I get it that way? How do you knock out the brassy tones? What silver shade does this achieve, purple or blue? What products are your holy grail?

Well let’s talk about it shall we..?

How do I get it that way?

So I go to the salon every 3-4 months (depending on regrowth) and I always ask for the same thing; Bleached at the roots, and toned from there down as much as I possible which sometimes results in my blonde being more on the purple side as purple acts as a colour neutraliser which knocks out those unsightly, yellow, brassy tones from blonde hair.

How do you knock out the brassy tones?

I achieve this by using a colour neutralising shampoo. And depending on the length of time you leave it on for will knock out any yellow tones.

Here is a before and after photo of me using the products that I am going to be talking about;

How to keep silver hair - Before toner

Before

How to keep silver hair - After toner

After

As you can see there is a significant amount of yellow-ish colour in the first photo before I used any toning products, and the second photo displays what the result is after the products are used. The hair now appears much cooler than the previous photo, with plenty of dimensions of grey and silver.

What silver shade does this achieve, purple or blue?

As you may have noticed, if you’re like me and have searched for your perfect silver. Silver comes in a couple of different shades; Blue and purple. This is all down to personal preference as to what you choose, as both shades will look equally as lovely and also neutralise those brassy locks.

What products are your holy grail?

There are a cocktail of products which I use and am constantly switching between;

At this present moment in time, I have been using and loving the Matrix Re-Bond Strength Rehab System Set. Very similar to our good friend Olaplex, this product provides the essential care and reparation that bleached hair like mine desperately needs.

However this is just a good cleansing product and not a toning shampoo, so in order to achieve my cool tresses, I use the Fanola Shampoo, which (don’t be alarmed) comes out blue and if you lather it up and leave it for 5 minutes then your hair will look instantly cooler and overall toned for the desired look.

Then as my hair is super damaged and needs a regular treatment, I will always finish off by using an intense treatment/mask, which will almost always be the Macadamia Deep Repair Mask. Which gives my hair the most incredible nourishment and helps to seal the cuticle making it overall feel smooth and manageable again.

These are all the products and steps I take in order to protect and care for my hair.

What do you guys use? I’m very keen to know as I could always use some advice or recommendations. (: How do you keep your silver hair?

Thanks for reading guys, I hope this has been insightful for you.

I’ve always been fascinated by silver hair but as a brunette, I find it hard to switch to such a lighter color! Silver does look amazing on you though 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

I love my silver although it is indeed quite the difficult colour to achieve, and I highly recommend taking your time if you are thinking about going down this lengthy process, as the overall condition of your hair will suffer otherwise. 😊

Absolutely loving that colour on you, it definitely suits you. I am not brave enough to dye my hair.

I never thought I would be brave either, but if life has taught me anything, it’s that life is way too short to not do what you want to do. (:

There is such a difference between the before and after picks – the treatments you use sound amazing and your hair is utterly gorgeous!

There is isn’t there? The only thing I’m noticing now (Because I strive for a perfect silver) is that maaaaybe I leave the toner on far too long as I am noticing deposits of blue throughout my hair also – Whoopsie!

I’ve always wanted to try silver hair! My sister is a hair stylist and offered to do it but I was worried it wouldn’t stay easily. Thanks for the tips!!

Just like with anything Hun, regular TLC will maintain your colour whether it is the brightest blue or the pearliest silver. Colour sticks to good conditioned hair. Hence why the products that I mentioned, are my go-to conditioning routine. I don’t really stop there either. Once out of the shower I apply a leave-in oil by Macadamia. Smells incredible and works wonders!

I’ve reached an age where my silver hair stays silver naturally, lol! I don’t use any products though, just a simple shampoo bar. Your hair looks AMAZING though!

    • August 23, 2018 / 7:39 am

Wow that must look incredible! And a shampoo bar you say? Sounds intriguing, but no conditioner?

I have dyed my hair pink and it just doesn’t last. I have tried everything but it’s gone within a week 🙁

    • August 23, 2018 / 7:41 am

I did have trouble when I dyed my hair pink, it was a 4 washes product and it only seemed to last 2 (Looked a bit mucky on the second too), but I think that’s just because we have very pourus hair, so the colour won’t stick as well. That’s why I highly recommend a good, regular, deep conditioning hair routine and treatment, to build up those bonds again!

I recently discovered Charles Worthington toning ultraviolet shampoo and conditioner and it’s the best I’ve ever tried. The shampoo stains my hands if I don’t wash it off straight away!

    • August 23, 2018 / 7:44 am

I’ve heard about this one, the trouble that I’m starting to see with the Fanola is if I leave it on for longer than 3 mins that I will notice blue colour deposits throughout my hair. So it will be interesting to hear whether or not the Charles Worthington does this too. (:

Ive never dyed my hair any colour but brown and dark red but this looks fab on you!

Believe it or not about 3 years ago I used to have jet black hair, and I always wanted to do the ‘Ariel look’ and have the beautiful mermaid-like tresses. Bu my hair LOVES warmth, and anything with pigment it will cling to. So I was too afraid to go for it. But my advice if you want to go silver would be; Take it slow, deep treatments and PLENTY of TLC!

I have naturally dark hair and have been dying it blonde for a while. Have always wanted to get it silver but I don’t think it’s light enough yet. But these tips will definitely be handy for the future!

Just keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll get there hun. Patience is a virtu, and what an amazing result it’ll be once you get there, and the condition will be amazing – Which is everything!
