Trying Keto For The First Time & Tips On How To Start

Atkins, Zone, Paleo, Low-Carb, Low-Fat, 5:2, Slimming World and finally the Ketogenic diet – Lots of diets around in the wellbeing world. Let’s just work backwards, shall we?

I decided to try Keto for the first time.

While I may still not quite understand the whole ‘ins and outs’ of the Keto diet (Or claim to be a professional in any way shape or form – Don’t at me!). I do know that the now-popular lifestyle plan is not only incredibly delicious (as most of your tasty morsels made are homecooked from scratch) but also as far as ‘controlled’ eating plans go, does not feel in the slightest bit restrictive – Bonus right?

What Exactly Is The Keto Diet?

So here is just a little ‘blurb’ about Keto to help those who may be interested –

Ketosis is a state which is achieved when your body becomes reliant on burning fat for energy instead of other energy sources; such as carbohydrates or sugar. When in this state the body turns fat into ketones within the liver, which helps supply lots of energy for the neurological system; i.e Brain.

Many avid “dieters” praise the “ketosis way” as it is known (by most legitimate professionals) for its many health benefits, the main one, of course, is to lose weight. Its list of benefits is extensive but however, not limited to;

Decreasing the chance of Heart Disease

Slowing Cancerous tumour growth

Slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease

Reduction in seizures when it comes to Epilepsy

Improving the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease

However, the primary (and most known one for its cause) being that it dramatically helps reduce blood sugar and insulin levels, by increasing the level of ketones in the body.

How Would I Start?

Like with most new diets, with a shopping list of course! And Macros – Macronutrients are so important in realising what nutrients your body will require in order to reach the state of ‘Ketosis’. There is a very helpful App on the store to help with this called, Keto Macros (Depicted by a very happy avocado)

Be aware of overspending – as most things you’ll most likely have at home!

“Get your aprons and pans at the ready..” As Mary Berry would say.

You can eat almost anything on the Keto diet – Providing you make it from scratch.

There’s plenty of sites to choose from on the interwebs for lots of helpful information on the exact; how to’s and what to eat, however, I’ll keep it short, sweet and snappy (why not) – As that’s how you want to start the keto diet;

Short and simple!

Meat

If it walks or swims (within reason) then it can be eaten. Just take care to notice if the meat you’re having is processed meat. Just remember to keep it higher fats than protein!

Think Fish, Chicken, Beef, Pork, and Lamb.

Eggs

Bake them, fry them, boil them, (throw them against the wall if you like – no don’t!) lots and lots of eggs! You think of the most eggs you can eat and then double, triple, quadruple it! Your secret love for eggs will most certainly be rewarded with this one. But if you’re not egg-static (See what I did there?) about eggs then there are other choices bound to suit your fussy tendencies.

Think Eggs! *thumbs up*

Veggies

If it sprouts above the soil-y earth and doesn’t look bean-shaped or potato plump then you can consume it – Yes not many restrictions here, you can sprout yourself silly and ‘cauli’-forth the new, leafy-loving you.

Think Cauliflower, Cabbage, Broccoli, Avocado, Courgettes, Tomatoes, Spinach, Peppers and Cucumber.

Dairy

Cheese, Butter, Cream – The fatter the content, the better! Try to avoid milk altogether as (dependent on how many cups a day you drink) the carbs can seriously add up! Also, always remember to check your nutritional label- As some brands are known to be naughty and like to hide hidden naughties in their produce.

Think Cheddar, Parmesan, Mozzarella, Edam, Double Cream, Clotted Cream and Unsalted Butter.

Berries

Notice how this title doesn’t come under “fruit”, that’s because if it’s not berries that you’re having, then I’m afraid it’s a big no-no. That being said, you still have to moderate the intake of berries that you do have. Unfortunately, you cannot be gluttonous here! It is recommended to have just half a cup of berries a day.

Think Strawberries, Blueberries, Raspberries, and Blackberries.

Keto it.. keep it simple! Using the above list as a guide, I’m sure you could conjure up something truly delectable. With a little help from the interwebs, I managed to create some absolute masterpieces without being a bonafide master chef! Here is just a small inspirational montage – Cue food porn and granite (marble-looking) goodness!

So Why Did I Decide To Jump On This Band-Wagon?

Aside from the beautiful delacacies you can enjoy daily, guilt-free!  More than anything I wanted to feel something other than lethargic and stressed.

Don’t worry, I’m not totally deluded by thinking that a sudden change in my diet is going to automatically solve all my problems. However, it certainly helped me cope, and deal with them more efficiently. And that was a HUGE positive for me.

By this new WOE (Way of eating) I have found that I have tons of energy, and am actually starting to feel like the future can be bright once again.

Couple more positives..

I was a major nail biter (stress provoked) and from eating this way, I now have at least nearly half an inch of natural nail growth – I have small nail beds, so that’s quite long for me!

I no longer drink alcohol – I know this may be a bone of contention for some, as you may not feel like it’s not something you necessarily want to give up – Hey I feel you, neither did I. Before I could easily have gotten through a 1L of pink gin in just two days – and believe me, I did!

It was never my intention to stop. However, slowly but surely I found myself starting to reduce what I was putting in my drink – Not because I was trying to restrict myself, but because I was no longer enjoying what I was actually having. So what do I drink now? Sparkling water. Sounds boring, I know. However, I’ve found, it ultimately tastes so much better while still containing that little naughty fizz to still feel like a grownup. And here’s another perk too, no more waking up to sluggish headaches!

It’s a well-known fact that the ketogenic diet can see these particular changes happen, after all, it’s a way of life, and not alarming at all. If anything I found it to be the ultimate blessing. I feel mentally, as well as physically like a whole new person, and I love it.

 

Tips For Keto Starters/Things I Wish I Knew

Don’t read up too much about it, or panic buy as you’ll end up sending yourself into a frenzy – Like me, when I believed I had to have all this ‘posh nosh’ that I’ve never heard of in order to accommodate my newly-found lifestyle.

Granted, the keto diet won’t be for everyone, as some people won’t be able to tolerate the high-fat intake as well as the tastes, texture and the demand to cook – And if that’s the case, there’s no shame and it’s totally fine. You have to do you and, more importantly, what feels right to you. There are still plenty of diets out there, so you’re bound to find the best one for you.
